Support
for Parents - Parenting Programmes
Practical Skills to Help Parents
Be More Responsive and Effective
The King’s Church runs Parenting Programmes which are
designed to help parents do what is one of the most difficult jobs on earth -
bringing up children!
The courses have been developed by the Family Caring Trust and have been used
successfully over many years by many different organizations seeking to help
parents. These courses have been featured both on television and in the national
press.
Four
programmes are offered:
- 0 to 6 Years Parenting Programme
- 5 to 15 Years Parenting Programme
- Teen Parenting Programme
- Assertiveness Course
Courses are run throughout the year in response to demand from parents.
Daytime programmes are normally held on Tuesday mornings during school term time
and a crèche facility is provided for pre-school age children. Evening
programmes are arranged on a night to suit participants.
Content
Each programme consists of 6 to 8 sessions, each looking at a particular
parenting issue or skill needed by parents.
Sessions look at subjects such as:
- Becoming a responsible parent
- Encouragement
- Listening
- Communicating about problems
- Disciplining children
- Talking together
Sessions are friendly and informal and usually consist of video material, a
brief talk and open discussion. At the end of each session, course members are
encouraged to develop a simple action plan to put into place the things learned.
Opportunity is given to provide feedback at the next session. A comprehensive
handbook is provided to all participants.
Cost
Each programme costs £1 per week to help cover the cost of the handbook
which is provided to all participants. If cost is a problem, The King’s Church is able to
offer help - please ask for details.
When and Where?
Programmes run throughout the year, normally in The King’s Church Thornton
Centre, which is on the corner of Edge Lane and Drummond Road Thornton.

Course Details
The three programmes offered have been produced by the the Family Caring Trust:
The Nought to Sixes Parenting Programme:
Eight weekly sessions offering effective parenting support to parents of
babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and children in the first few years of primary
school. The parents handbook entitled ‘From Pram to Primary School’ has been
simply written with a jargon free common sense approach. The programme has been
produced in co-operation with Barnardos and includes video material
(incorporating the BBC’s acclaimed QED programme on parenting).
The Fives to Fifteens basic Parenting Programme:
Eight weekly sessions to help parents of children five to fifteen years old
improve their communication skills and create a frameworkof discipline and
respect in their families. It is the Family Caring Trust’s most popular
programme. Programme materials include a parents handbook entitled ‘What Can A
Parent Do?’ and video material for use in sessions.
The Teen Programme:
Six weekly sessions to reinforce the same skills as the basic parenting
programme while dealing with the more difficult situations met in teen years. It
is recommended that parents of teenagers experience the Fives to Fifteens
programme first. Programme materials include a parents handbook entitled ‘What
Can The Parents Of A Teenager Do?’
Assertiveness Course
Six weekly sessions to help you deal with conflict. The course looks at
ways of respecting others but not letting yourself be walked on - especially for
parents.
